Old 68 years, he came to power on 2 December 1990 after having succeeded in his coup d'état.
Mahamat Idriss Déby takes charge
In a press release read on the air of Télé Tchad this 20 April by General Azem Bermandoa Agouna, the army announced the dissolution of the government, of the National Assembly and the establishment of a transition. This will be directed for a period of eighteen months by a military council., of which Mahamat Idriss Déby took the lead. This last, son of Idriss Déby Itno, aged 37 is a general in the Chadian army and has headed the General Directorate of Security Services of State Institutions for many years (DGSSIE), of which the presidential guard is part.
