Sylvain Adoho (Master Bobos) about the burial of the dead in Benin : “The causes of a death determine the rites to be performed”

“The dead are not dead. They are in sleeping water, they are in the box, they are in the crowd” said Birago Diop. This perception of death according to African society testifies to the particular attention that families give to their deceased through their own rituals.. In Benin, this customary practice varies according to the circumstances of the death of close relatives. As in other parts of the country, people from the Adja milieu are no exception to the rule. At this level, funeral rites remain a practice that people value in view of the importance it has for both the deceased and the bereaved families. According to Master Bobos (Sylvain Adoho) spiritualist-sociologist in an interview with Benin Intelligent, liturgical ceremonies and rituals are important for the deceased to be accepted by their Ancestors. What are the different types of funeral rites that exist within sociolinguistic communities in Benin? ?

We cannot enumerate the different types of funeral rites. There's too much. There are as many rites as there are causes of death. The causes of a death determine the rites to be performed. There are rites linked to clans, communities or a clan group sharing the same panegyric.

Some deaths are linked to specific practices. In the event of a traffic accident, there are rites to do before burying the person. When you are a follower of a vodun, there are rituals. When you die by hanging, there are ceremonies. When you die in a traffic accident they don't bury you in a room, but in the open air under the sun unlike the cemetery, sure.

What functions do these death-specific rites play? ?

When death is brutal, the person is not supposed to experience an ascension. The person will enter a sphere where his vital energy will continue to work and therefore the person cannot leave, find your own inner light. So the person is supposed to enter a sphere where people who had suffered the same fate will be there. So it takes years for the person to find their way back to be able to find their own inner light. ; and therefore when this state of affairs is not good for the ancestors, they searched again and again. They saw and they understood that a special rite is needed for those who died brutally so that, failing to find their own inner light, we now accompany them through this rite so that they open their eyes and say to themselves "I am no longer in my flesh, I am no longer in my subject, I am no longer in my body” and therefore “I am already dead”.

The rite will remind them that they are already dead and that they no longer have access to the world of the living.. From the moment the deceased remembers that he is no longer in his flesh, in matter, the deceased now has the opportunity to say "be careful, I have to go find my inner light, work on this light in order to return again to matter in due time” and that is why, the rites will differ from each other.

You see someone who is in great shape and who is being brutalized by a vehicle : he didn't have the head that he could die while someone who was sick, in his head when he starts to feel tired, himself is already beginning to ask himself "am I not going to die ? “All that happens a little bit in his head and sometimes it even comes out of his body, from his sleep and finds ancestors who are already beginning to reach out to him. He can already begin to call the name of certain deceased members of his family.. This one is already leaving. He himself can already remember that he is leaving this world.

After the ceremonies related to this death, the person will quickly remember where there are sorcerers in certain families who will quickly hurry to take his hand and put him at the entrance to the valley of the shadow of death and tell him not to have fear ; because this zone is a zone of fear, that he must walk with confidence, courage and certainty to be able to cross this zone ; and you will see in the bible, it says "when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil" actually, it is this ceremony. It is a rite that allows the deceased not to fear evil when he goes through the valley of the shadow of death..

What happens when these specific rites are not performed ?

When from a given death, what needs to be done is not done, the deceased will wander a lot first. The first thing, is that the deceased can wander a third of the age he had in his flesh, in his physical body before dying. I assume the person died violently at 90 years. She is able to wander 30 years still on earth even if there are rites, before understanding what to do.

But now if there are no rites, if the ceremonies have not been done, the soul of the deceased can wander for centuries, 200 even 300 years before finding his light but only when a great spiritual master would have let a drop of his blood flow on the ground. What is translated by the biblical passage "Jesus died on the cross with his blood to save us", i.e. “rescuing wandering entities”.

As well, he may have "sorcerers" come out of his body and are aware that they will find him. This is the case in given pantheons where we bury people who made a deep astral journey just because the families do not feel his breath. The “sorcerer” can return to get his body and the body is no longer there. So he'll go back to the meeting place (termite mound, TREE) wizards, wait for his family and this permanently since he no longer has a physical body to find himself among humans. It is when a great spiritual master or a great enlightened person will let a drop of his blood flow on the ground that the latter will regain his consciousness and leave..

There are as many rites as there are causes of death and that is why the ceremonies must be done for the well-being of the person.. Now if the ceremonies are not done, the person is forced to wander for years before finding his own inner light.
