Sites conducive to green spaces in Abomey-Calavi : A cartography available

Abomey-Calavi has an exhaustive map of sites suitable for green spaces in the municipality. This is thanks to a study carried out by researchers from the universities of Abomey-Calavi and Kétou. This is Osseni, Dossou Yovo, Gbesso and Sinsin.

The study carried out focuses on the application of Geographic Information System methods (SAY) through a multi-criteria analysis. Six factors (land use, altitude, paint, distance from main roads, proximity to urban centers and distance from flood zones, water places) were combined using the ArcGIS “Spatial Analysis” extension to generate the green space suitability map. Results show vast areas of land, dont 23,27 % are very suitable and 26,06% suitable for landscaping in this municipality. The ranking of the factors revealed that altitude, proximity to road networks, large population centers and distance from wetlands taken, count for 18%, compared to 14% for other factors linked to the study environment. However, the use of these results must take into account the existing inhabited areas for a good selection of sites.

With this study carried out by the four researchers, the most populated commune of Benin is fixed. The competent authorities and decision-makers at various levels have a scientific lever on which to rely in the choice of appropriate sites for the creation of green spaces in order to integrate them into their sustainable development plan throughout the territory of the city of Abomey-Calavi. It should be noted that green spaces occupy a special place in urbanization and fight against the harmful effects of climate change.. They also constitute privileged rest areas for many citizens.. It must be remembered that the study is the work of the authors : Osseni, A.A., Dossou Yovo, H.O., Gbesso, F.G.H., Insist, B. and titled “Multi-criteria analysis based on GIS for the selection of Urban Green Spaces in the municipality of Abomey-Calavi, South Benin”.
