Patrice Talon on the proposed amnesty law for exiles and political detainees : ” This is technically impossible”

The outcome of the amnesty law proposed by the parliamentary group “The Democrats” is now known. Reading the statement from the Head of State, Patrice Talon during his media release from 23 December 2023, everything is clearer than crystal water.

Confirmation has just been given again by President Patrice Talon who for a second time did not hesitate to oppose a “non” categorical. This application, he emphasizes “is technically impossible”.

Even though Parliament was 100% democrat, explains Patrice Talon “such a law could not be passed. We can't choose like that, select ten, twenty or thirty people in the country and say, these people are pardoned for everything they have done. It is not possible”

He adds, according to AFP: “We can grant amnesty for an event, a particular fact as we did in 2019. There was a serious situation. All those involved have been amnestied”

On the case of opponent and former Minister of Justice Reckya Madougou, whose opposition is demanding his release, the Beninese head of state was clear: “She was convicted because she ordered the assassination of the former mayor of Parakou and her accomplices were arrested and confessed.. We saw the traces of the exchanges by which people were paid, mandated to commit assassination, sponsored by a woman”.
