Faced with the deterioration of the political and social climate in Benin: A priest jumps into the arena

“The Power of Denial : chronicle of an assumed democracy” is the title of the latest work by Father Éric Aguénounon, published on 8 September 2024 by Éditions L’Harmattan. The launch of this book took place in Cotonou, in the presence of numerous political actors and civil society. In this essay of 129 pages, the priest and political analyst addresses the abuses of the current regime in Benin, a country that was once a model of democracy in West Africa, recognized for its social policies in favor of farmers and disadvantaged populations.

Aguénounon positions himself as a committed thinker, courageously denouncing the political situation marked by a concentration of power and an erosion of freedoms. In a period when Benin is going through turbulence, he emphasizes that the concerns he expresses are not new, but rather shared and often suppressed truths. Expedit Ologou, who presented the book, affirms that the author is not inventing anything, but draws on the reality experienced by the Beninese. Father Aguénounon, aware of the risks of his position, affirms that his approach is part of a continuity of writing aimed at challenging power on its responsibilities.
In his thoughts, Aguénounon evokes two significant events in his life which shaped his commitment and his thinking. He insists that he positions himself neither as a supporter nor as an opponent, but as a free thinker whose pen is dedicated to denouncing injustices. According to him, the evaluation of a power should not be limited to its infrastructure achievements, but must also take into account the human investments made to improve the well-being of citizens.
The Benin, despite its potential, faces serious social challenges. The inflation which marked the two mandates of President Patrice Talon as well as policies perceived as insensitive to vulnerable groups ended up worsening inequalities and poverty.
Aguénounon therefore calls for a return to inclusive policies, promoting access to essential services and support for disadvantaged populations. He underlines the urgency of reestablishing a sincere dialogue between the government and citizens in order to restore confidence and guarantee true democracy..
“The Power of Denial…” is a bold critique of Benin’s current situation and a call to action for a better future. Through his writing, Aguénounon not only hopes to raise awareness, but also inspire democratic and social renewal in his country.
