Dr Christian Tohouénou, Obstetrician gynecologist: “Myomas can…be an obstacle to conception”

These last years, women are victims of certain diseases that prevent others from procreating. Among these diseases we can note Fibroma or Myoma. In this interview, Doctor Christian Tohouénou, Obstetrician gynecologist, gives us some details about these tumors. For the promoter of Cabinet Médical Saint, the origin of these tumors is still unclear.

What do we mean by Fibroids or Myomas? ?

Myomas or Fibroids designate the same pathology. In reality we are talking about Leiomyoma which designates a tumor (masse) which develops in the uterus, more precisely at the expense of uterine muscle cells.

What causes these diseases in a woman ?

The origin of these tumors is still poorly understood.. But we know of risk factors including heredity, hormones and growth factors, obesity, age.

Tell us the symptoms that allow us to know that a woman has these diseases ?

Several circumstances can reveal the presence of myomas. For example, sometimes after a routine gynecologist examination or during a pelvic ultrasound to explore a desire for motherhood. It should also be noted that sometimes the presence of myomas can cause functional problems such as : increased belly volume ; pelvic pain ; heavy bleeding during menstruation ; fluid discharge from the vagina (hydrorrhea) ; miction fréquente ou difficulté à uriner….

How are these diseases diagnosed in a woman ?

Once in consultation, the presence of the fibroid can be suspected by the health worker's examination. The diagnosis is confirmed by performing a pelvic ultrasound which finds the mass and specifies its location on the uterus but also its size..

Can these diseases prevent a woman from childbearing? ?

Myomas can in some cases (position and size on the uterus) be an obstacle to conception. They can also cause abortions during pregnancy..

How to treat these diseases ?

Treatment of myomas is most often done surgically. (myomectomie, a surgical procedure which involves removing one or more fibroids (or myomas) uterines while keeping the uterus. This intervention is very different depending on the type of fibroid, in localization, her size). Therapeutic abstention can be observed in cases where the myoma is small and does not cause any functional discomfort.. Operable myomas are large myomas or myomas whose position causes profuse bleeding, severe pain or prevents conception.

During pregnancy, the Doctor realizes through the analyzes that the latter is a victim of these diseases. What complications can this woman have from pregnancy to delivery? ?

During pregnancy, myomas can : increase in size ; cause pelvic pain ; provoke threats of abortion or premature birth ; cause growth retardation in the fetus ; cause dystocia during labor, requiring cesarean section ; cause hemorrhage during delivery during childbirth.
