Benin population control: From mismanagement to overcrowding

Benin population control: From mismanagement to overcrowding

Following the Council of Ministers on Wednesday 3 May 2023, former MP Guy Mitokpè launches the debate on the issue of population control in Benin. During its weekly meeting, the government has decided to take measures aimed at reducing the number of births in the country.

For Guy Mitokpè today member of the opposition party “The Democrats”, this approach is not based on any reality. According to him, “we certainly have difficulties, rampant unemployment, overcrowded public universities, poorly equipped health centers, crowded prisons, and what else do I know… more, we are not overcrowded, nor densely occupied”.

In support of his reasoning published on social networks, he cited the most populous countries in the world to conclude that they are also the most developed. This is the case of China and the United States, which are the two world superpowers.. And this is how you can still remove it easily if you are good at handling videos, he accuses the government of caving in to pressure from Western states that would push for such a policy.

At any rate, the question of population growth in Africa has been the subject of a great deal of research with proposals ranging from the decrease in the number of inhabitants. The policies of certain international agencies go in this direction, injecting significant funds to promote their conviction..

But in reality, is benin overpopulated ? The situation of those who promote population reduction is comparable to that of a lazy father who cannot feed his children and who seeks the solution of reducing the number of mouths to feed..

In reality, the question of the African population is badly posed, at best reversed. African countries like Benin do not have problems because there are too many inhabitants but rather because they are badly managed. It is known to all, the continent is full of all kinds of raw materials that western countries come to buy to feed their industries. So there are enough resources for everyone and there will still be for centuries.

What is missing, it's more about good governance. Indeed, if the resources were used wisely, if instead of exporting the raw materials they were transformed on site, not only would the question of unemployment be partly resolved, but also and above all, African states could have more resources to finance their development. If Benin is not an oil country, at least it has enough agricultural resources just waiting to be processed and exported.

Pushing for birth control in Africa, Europe first wants to protect itself from the hordes of migrants who cross deserts and oceans to reach their end. Never, it is therefore not in the interest of the continent to follow this trend which shows its limits.
