Benin-Niger : Towards the opening of the border

Benin-Niger : Towards the opening of the border

After a year of crisis, traffic between Benin and Niger should return to order shortly. Indeed, Niamey authorities have started to show signs of goodwill since former presidents visited Niamey on a mediation mission.

The continued closure of Benin with Niger since the day after the military coup in Niamey until today has more than undermined a relationship of legendary cordiality between the two countries.. Despite the attempts of the Beninese authorities, the northern neighbor maintained the containers installed to barricade the only road serving as the official border. As retaliation, the government has, Firstly, prevented the loading of Nigerien oil coming to the port of Sèmè via a pipeline, before reconsidering his decision.

It must be said that Benin tried everything, made concessions in order to get Niger to open this border even though the biggest losers are not the Beninese. Malanville, the border town is home to a large Nigerien community who settled there to buy food products and transport them to their country. A country that lacks almost everything because it lacks fertile land and water for agriculture.

More, refusing to take this consideration into account, the military in power in Niamey relied on security alibis to continue to block the border. Despite the numerous denials on the Beninese side, they continued to claim that Benin harbors French military bases ready to attack them. Even though they realized that their narrative is inaccurate, officials in Niamey persisted in their position, which harms their fellow citizens more than the Beninese.

The Nigerien position could therefore no longer hold out for long, especially since, on another side, both countries lose enormously economically. The pipeline that originates from northern Niger and crosses Benin is an important source of revenue for both countries. To bypass Benin, the military regime's zealots have asked the authorities to install other pipelines in Nigeria and even Chad, which is not realistic. Reason therefore demanded that those responsible for Cotonou and Niamey sit around a negotiating table to resolve their differences.. The former presidents of Benin therefore went to resolve a situation which was an impasse, some supplicating and others persisting out of pride. For all these reasons, borders cannot be kept closed for long. What is already certain, the lines began to move for the return of good cooperation between the two brotherly countries.

  • Mr journalist, you know well that everyone reads you even the Nigerian authorities. Your way of presenting the facts is not in a way to appease people. Why do you use the words Zealous, pride so on. You have no sympathy with President TALON. No I tell you no. If the holders said they are going to pass through Egypt or anywhere,? Your way of delivering your pen is not brilliant. Thank you can you insult me. You like to light garbage on fire.

    • Well said brother

    • But the country that does not have fertile land makes your country live , what is the share of transactions from Niger at your port, do you have oil, l’or, l’uranium, le phosphate, limestone, the iron, the livestock, the onion ????. Your surface area only represents that of a single region on the 8 what does Niger have?. 1 267 000 Km². You have to move your tongue a thousand times before speaking even if you are a journalist

    • Hum, you write anyway. So the demons are the Nigerian junta. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  • In Benin the majority of journalists are arsonists. They have no professionalism. These are people who have failed the baccalaureate several times and come to throw themselves into journalism without any knowledge. People full of hatred, a hatred that will slowly kill you 🔥 because you can't change anything. When Niger decides it will open its border. Niger is poor and has no water from the lies that we make people believe and that you repeat like parrots. Band of unconscious people.

    • Niger does not have water Niger has oil gold uranium iron phosphate…

  • Instead of telling the two countries to sit down at the negotiating table,we must tell Benin to invade Niger and impose its wishes on it.
Which school did you attend to know that in Malanville it is only Nigeriens who are suffering from the closure of borders?.
For your information,GOOD. Before the advent of oil,Nigeriens come to Benin, but with their means to obtain what they need, not to take gift.
You believe that it is out of pity in Niger that the two former presidents, that I respect a lot have gone to do meditation.
It is because of such imaginations coming from people like you that Africa continues to suffer. If that is your guideline, best wishes, but keep that in mind:”those who want to remain perpetually dependent, are free to stay, the others disembarked “.

    • Thank you very much my brother for this answer.

  • Mr journalist you are a joke . Why so much contempt for Niger ? And you say Niger is a poor country, are you sure? ? Do you really know the riches of Niger?? But you're right it's because of corrupt leaders ;selfish in the service of France that we had that even you, a lesser person, dares to insult Niger . Time will tell between Niger and Benin which is poor. As you say it is only the population of Niger who suffers. I am Nigerian and I ask our authorities to leave this border closed if it is Benin which is the source of our breath that it be cut off

  • Benin and Niger are brothers and sisters, so we want peace in the two brother countries that the borders are open thank you.

  • Mr journalist, the terrorist training camps are well and truly established in Benin with French instructors and this is a document. Coming from France, we have no doubt that this is their modus operandi wherever they have settled in the Sahel.. We must move away from this narrative according to which Niger is a very poor country, if we are as poor as they tell you all year long, why seek to destabilize us by all means? Why are we chasing the French, they refuse to leave and leave us in peace? Patrice Talon just seeks to preserve his own interests. Whoever lodges these bank accounts and their actions in the West has no choice but to obey their dictate. As a Nigerian I don't blame him. But it is up to you, the Beninese, to know what you really want and impose your will for sustainable and stable development.. With the risk of harboring terrorists you will certainly have a nightmare awakening one day, it's not a wish because you are my brothers and I don't want anything bad to happen to you. And note that the terrorists I'm talking about are only the French, otherwise why we chased them from the Sahel. It is they themselves who give information to terrorists. This must be clear to everyone, these terrorists are not Muslims, much less jihadists, just bandits and armed arms of imperialist Westerners for no well-defined objective. : plunder our resources while we occupy fight against the Caoh that they imposed on us and keep us in underdevelopment.

  • Do we need to write all this down?. You're not doing our president any good, huh?. While Wise Men run to defuse the bomb, you are still throwing fuel on the fire. In any case, I inform you that we are dealing with a general. What you don't know, I am very sure of it, a general never backs down from an obstacle. Therefore please put away your feathers which do us more harm than good.

  • It’s funny, eh, junk journalism, if Niger is a poor country without a fertile head and without water, when is it Benin? ? Your Benin depends on 100% Nigerien freight, your port is of no use to you if Nigerien goods no longer transit there. on the contrary food journalist it is Benin which is poor without mining resources your only resource is this port this is why your zealous president wants at all costs the opening of the border and well suffer in your small country Niger at d other alternatives and can do without your port. As for the pipeline, it is ancient history; the new pipeline will pass through Chad to reach Cameroon and another interconnection will be made with Nigeria.. There's no point working with such unworthy people who have changing moods.

    • Thank you kader….shit to this disrespectful food journalist. If Niger is poor, why does your President Patrice calibrator want us to open our borders?…the Beninese have never respected Niger yet we help your economy… today everyone both in Niger and in Blessed that your economy depends on Niger so respect to the Nigerien People

  • I wasted time reading you. You said nothing good. Such a press organ must be closed. In Benin there are media professionals but you, you are the shame of Benin.

    • If Niger is poor and Nigeriens suffer from the closure of their border , I remind you that it is the Beninese who have always come to negotiate the reopening of this border but Niger has never sent a single person in this direction , if that’s what you think, the Nigerien authorities still continue to keep this border closed, we will see who suffers the most

  • You these kinds of media are a shame for Africa and for all humanity zero

  • When Benin closed its border unilaterally in the name of ECOWAS which had decreed an embargo against a landlocked country even though the very founding texts of the community prohibit it, where have you been ? Proud Nigerien ? Rather a dignified and proud people. Pride is yours instead, the Beninese and you pay the high price. Faure from Togo was wiser than your French stooge. You should be ashamed of writing a certain number of things.

  • A Beninese MP has just confirmed the presence of French soldiers in Kandi. There's 300 French soldiers called trainers for 200 Beninese learners ! Parliamentary fact-finding missions were sent to the site and confirm this !

    • Unfortunately we have Beninese parents otherwise I particularly don't like the character of the Beninese. Angry all the time with hatred in my heart. Even in their markets, you will find everyone angry. So mean you see it in their faces. So they are naturally like that we cannot change them. We can only be around them as they are since they are our brothers. It’s all this mixture that makes the world.

  • Barad of journalist. The border will open we need your mother

  • Another food journalist… You shame Africa.

    • I wasted my time reading primary school French and primate thinking illogical reasoning

  • No but, you don't fix things by throwing fuel on the fire…
As a Beninese I am sorry but I do not agree with your way of reporting the facts…
You can't call people zealous and some other dishonorable name and claim to want peace., frankly, above all, it’s everyone in the world who reads you…
Please excuse him dear Nigerian brother and sister…

  • Merci mes frères nigériens pour la réponse apportée au faut journaliste.je dis faut, parce qu’un journaliste digne de son nom, conscient et clairvoyant ne peut mettre l’huile dans les ordures .
